The Flora-Bama Lounge, a legendary establishment straddling the Florida-Alabama line, hosts its annual Interstate Mullet Toss & Gulf Coast’s Greatest Beach Party from April 25 to 27. This iconic event, which began in 1985, has evolved from a modest gathering into one of the most anticipated beach parties on the Gulf Coast, drawing thousands of participants and spectators from around the world.
At the heart of the festivities is the mullet toss, in which people throw a dead mullet, a common Gulf Coast fish, from a 10-foot circle in Florida across the state line into Alabama. Participants compete for the longest throw in their age and sex categories. Children’s competitions take place each morning from 10 to noon, followed by adult competitions from noon to 4. Each day culminates with an awards ceremony.
Beyond the mullet toss, more than 45 bands of diverse genres perform across multiple stages throughout the weekend. Food and beverage options include the Flora-Bama’s famed Bushwacker cocktail. Additional attractions such as a bikini contest and beach games contribute to the festive atmosphere.
The event also serves a philanthropic purpose. Proceeds from the mullet toss benefit local youth charities, including educational and prevention programs supported by the Community Drug & Alcohol Council. In previous years, the event’s donations have exceeded $30,000.
The Flora-Bama charged a cover beginning at 9 a.m. on event days: $10 per day for ages 21 and up and $15 for those 16 to 20. Children 15 and under are admitted free until 6 p.m., when the venue is restricted to 21 and older. Parking near the lounge is limited.
The entry fee includes access to all activities and live music. Entering the mullet toss costs $20, which includes a commemorative T-shirt.
Accommodations in the surrounding area tend to fill up; many attendees book months or years in advance. For those unable to secure nearby lodging, the Pensacola area offers additional accommodations and is a short drive away.
