Along the sandy stretch where Florida meets Alabama, one of the Gulf Coast’s most unconventional events is set to return April 24 to 26 at 17401 Perdido Key Drive. The annual Interstate Mullet Toss, held at Flora-Bama Lounge Package and Oyster Bar, has grown from a casual beach gathering into what organizers describe as the region’s largest beach party.
Participants stand in Florida and attempt to throw a dead mullet—a common Gulf fish—across the state line into Alabama. The person who throws the fish the farthest earns bragging rights, and often prizes, but for many attendees, the competition is secondary to the atmosphere.
The Flora-Bama, long known as a landmark of Gulf Coast nightlife, provides a fitting backdrop. Straddling the Florida-Alabama border, the venue has hosted the Mullet Toss for decades, building a reputation for hosting large-scale events that blend music, coastal culture and community tradition.
Beyond the novelty of tossing fish across state lines, the event has also taken on a charitable component in recent years, with proceeds benefiting local youth organizations and community initiatives.
With its mix of quirky competition, coastal tradition and community impact, the Interstate Mullet Toss continues to draw thousands to the Gulf Coast each year, proving that even the most unconventional events can become lasting regional traditions.
