Moviegoers will have the opportunity to experience one of cinema’s most influential thrillers on the big screen when the Saenger Theatre presents Jaws as part of its Summer Movie Series on Sunday, July 26.
The screening begins at 3 p.m. and celebrates the enduring legacy of the 1975 classic that helped redefine modern filmmaking and launched the era of the summer blockbuster.
Directed by Steven Spielberg and based on Peter Benchley’s bestselling novel, Jaws follows Police Chief Martin Brody as he confronts a growing threat off the coast of a small New England beach town. After a series of deadly shark attacks disrupt the summer tourist season, Brody teams up with a marine biologist and an experienced shark hunter in a desperate effort to track down and destroy the great white shark responsible before panic overtakes the island community.
Upon its release, Jaws captivated audiences with its suspenseful storytelling and groundbreaking approach to thriller filmmaking. Rather than relying heavily on special effects, Spielberg used creative camera work, strategic editing and suggestion to build tension.
The movie’s impact was further elevated by composer John Williams’ iconic two-note theme, widely regarded as one of the most recognizable scores in film history.
Jaws not only earned critical acclaim and commercial success but also revolutionized Hollywood marketing and distribution strategies, paving the way for the blockbuster model that continues today.
The Saenger Summer Movie Series offers audiences the chance to revisit classic films in the historic theater setting, providing a unique opportunity to experience beloved movies as they were originally intended to be seen.
The screening is open to the public and offers audiences a chance to revisit one of the most influential and thrilling films in cinematic history.
