The Branyon Backcountry Trail was recently named No. 1 for the third consecutive year in USA Today’s Readers’ Choice Awards for 10 Best Recreational Trails.

The Backcountry Trail system winds through nine ecosystems across 6,180 acres along Alabama’s Gulf Coast, right next to Pensacola Beach. A joint initiative of Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, Gulf State Park and property owners, the project reflects a commitment to conservation, recreation and community connection.

The network’s 28-plus miles of paved paths link Orange Beach and Gulf Shores and invite visitors to explore the region’s rich ecological and cultural heritage. With 26 interconnected trails, the system offers opportunities for biking, jogging, walking, skating, rock climbing, photography and wildlife watching. Nature lovers can identify native plants and trees or simply soak in the serenity of the coastal habitats.

Portions of the trail trace routes used by the region’s indigenous peoples, explorers and settlers. The area is also home to the legend of the Catman, a mysterious figure said to roam the backwoods, part man and part wildcat. Tales of eerie encounters and shadowy sightings have become a staple of Gulf Coast folklore.

To enhance the experience, trail users are encouraged to download the free OuterSpatial app, available in the App Store and Google Play, to pinpoint their location and navigate the trail system safely.

While the trail invites exploration, it also comes with safety and use guidelines:

  • Only nonmotorized vehicles.

  • No golf carts, Class 3 e-bikes or scooters.

  • 10 mph speed limit.

  • No smoking or open flames.

  • Pets on leashes at all times.

  • No littering.

  • No feeding or disturbing wildlife.

  • Trail open only during daylight hours.

  • Camping only in designated areas.

Whether you’re seeking a quiet nature walk or a family biking adventure, the Backcountry Trail delivers a uniquely Southern experience where community, history and natural beauty converge.
